Cronic Hunger Essay - 866 Words
Chronic Hunger People often misunderstand and misuse the word, hunger. Hunger isnââ¬â¢t the sound our stomach makes due to not eating for a few hours. Hunger is a disease that arises when people donââ¬â¢t get enough food to provide the nutrients to experience a healthy active life. Hunger is a reality and growing issue. It is not an issue that has recently began; it has been on going for years. A person at risk of going hungry has surged since the start of the recession. Most people are ignorant to the fact that hunger is present and exists only in Third world countries, and not in First world countries. This is the reason why I have donated some of my time to attempt to create a change. I decided to work with a food pantry in one of the richestâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The functionalist perspective also believes poverty is needed for society to function. It creates low paying jobs that are needed, farm workers, gardeners, childcare workers, and restaurant workers. If there was not pover ty in society who would do these needed low paying jobs? Then there is the conflict perspective, it believes and states that because there is conflict in society there will be poverty in society as well. If there is wealthy people there has to be poor people, it balances society out. Wealthy people are self-centered and believe they deserve to be at the high position in society that they are. They view every lower class and poverty as a needed part of society, based on inequality. Over all the conflict perspective views poverty and conflict as a need and necessity to try to fix the problem of inequality. Lastly there is, symbolic interactionist perspective, which focuses on how meanings, labels, and definitions affect and are affected by social life. Society gives meanings and labels to everything. These meanings and labels affect the labeled and often cause them consequences. Individuals labeled, poor, are stigmatized as lazy, irresponsible, ignorant, and worthless. Soon they begin to believe and lack motivation to surpass this living. Due to these symbols existing and causing consequences to people there

Essay on Engineering Developments - 987 Words
Engineering, in simple terms, is the application of science for the purpose of fulfilling the needs of society. In order for engineering to fully benefit society, engineering must continue progressing with this technologically advancing world. The most prominent advancements in engineering concern advancements in the field of medicine and health. Both engineering and medicine are so deeply correlated that current medicine would not be as advanced as it is nowadays without the assistance of engineering. If engineering had never advanced through the ages, then hip replacements, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), bioengineered skin, and bioengineered food would not exist for the benefit of humans. Without the study of engineering, manyâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Also, the engineering research done with artificial joint replacements has lessened the risk of these joint replacement surgeries. Through the modifications achieved through engineering research, many more people will contin ue to lead more active lives because they wonââ¬â¢t be withheld by a failing joint (ââ¬Å"Hip Joint Replacementâ⬠). Engineering is crucial for the development of furthering techniques for diagnosing ailments. One such technique that engineering research has had such an impact on is magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The most important diagnose provided from MRIs is the diagnose of diseased tissues (i.e. cancerous tissues). This is significant because cancer is a growing concern in the world today due to its increasing death toll. However, MRIs werenââ¬â¢t always this successful in diagnosing. It was due to advancements in engineering research that allowed the success of MRIs today. Due to engineering advancements using technology, MRIs now have amazing abilities that allow it to discern tissues by their physical and biochemical properties. With advancing engineering research using technology, the images created MRIs have clearer resolutions that allow for more accura te diagnoses of diseased tissues. Through the technological advancements provided by engineers, the ability to diagnose diseases has improved greatly. Thus, saving the lives of many more people will become a reality. The War on Terror Free Essays
The War on Terror; an assertion that came from George W. Bush during his time as President. This wasnââ¬â¢t just for 9/11 attacks, this was a battle to stop all terrorist threats. We will write a custom essay sample on The War on Terror or any similar topic only for you Order Now Were we, as Americans, naive to think this could never happen on our soil? As the leading nation of democracy and freedom, did we threaten other countries sovereignty from within? Before that day, I thought I could count on my governmentââ¬â¢s intelligence community to receive, aggregate and use that information to predict future terrorist attacks on our soil. What was the aftermath of such atrocities? The War on Terror, is it our war alone? From the beginning, the War on Terror was not only a physical battle, but an ideological battle ââ¬â a fight against global terrorists and their murderous ideology. On September 11, 2001, terrorists successfully crashed two airplanes into the World Trade Centre and one into the Pentagon, which resulted in the death of more than 2,700 people. The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, were acts of war against the United States, peaceful people throughout the world, and the very principles of liberty and human dignity. The attackers were Islamic terrorists from Saudi Arabia and several other Arab nations. Reportedly financed by the al-Qaeda terrorist organization of Saudi fugitive Osama bin Laden, they were allegedly acting in retaliation for Americaââ¬â¢s support of Israel, its involvement in the Persian Gulf War and its continued military presence in the Middle East. It would seem the attacks were more than a retaliation. Some speculated this was an inside job and was orchestrated to push a political or financial agenda. Conspiracy theorists believe that the government wanted to use the attacks to justify an invasion on Iraq and Afghanistan to secure oil interests. In the days preceding the attacks, an ââ¬Ëextraordinaryââ¬â¢ amount of put options (investments that pay off only when a stock drops in price) were placed on the stocks of two airlines ââ¬â American and United, which happened to be the airlines hijacked during 9/11. As such, some theorists believe that traders had been given advance warning of the attacks and were cashing in on the tragedy. The United States has the most powerful Air Force in the world and to have four planes high jacked, flown to their perspective target without being engaged by our air superiority is a embarrassment. 2. Why didnââ¬â¢t we know about it? These attacks were never expected and as a result, national security measures needed to change and change fast. The ââ¬Å"war on terrorâ⬠is unlike any other war the U.S has ever fought. This new enemy does not identify themselves with uniforms, but rather they blend into the civilian population, which makes them almost impossible to identify and their attacks can happen anywhere and anytime. 3. what are we doing about it? The Global War on Terror is a military campaign led by the United States and the United Kingdom and supported by other NATO members. It was originally against al Qaeda and other terrorist organizations with the purpose of eliminating them. This paper discusses how the Bush Administration handled the War on Terror as well as different aspects of it, including its terminology, its objectives, its military operations and criticism against it. â⬠¦er 17, 2001). Lets Go Phantoms, Lets Go is what I was hearing as I was running down the field. It was second half and we were tied at 12-12. The game was getting rough and the referees were throwing cards against both teams. It was about half way through the second half and Bayport-Blue Point was up 14-12. We all knew that we had to hold the ball and be confident. As I was running down the field the team by yelling and communicated on levels that I didnââ¬â¢t even know we had I heard from every direction spread out, and move the ball The final 30 seconds was running on the clock, my heart was beating fast, I was sweating and shaking. I took the chance to make my last and final cut towards the goal, I got a pass from my teammate and quick sticked it into the goal. I just feel by becoming one Ill always be working on a case and what if I want to go out with friends or do something fun. I also feel that once Im studying to become one what if along the way somewhere Ill find it boring and think about what Ive done and want to regret it. Then I just waisted my time for nothing. After having second thoughts about being a lawyer I thought about becoming a teacher like my mom. Then I saw how many papers she brings home to grade then I think wow thats a lot of work. Also sometimes I hear how rude and disrespectful the kids are, and how they give the teachers attitude. That would be horrible. Then I realized I wouldnt want a job like that. Lastly I thought about becoming a pediatrition. Its crossed my mind so many times because most of my female cousins wanted to do the same thing. When I heard I became interested and wanted to know what it was. When I found out it was then when I decided to become one. I had knew right then and there that I wanted to become a pediatrition. And today that is still my dream to go to colledge and make my dream of becomind a pediatrition come true. Of course I would have to go through high school and so on to do so, but Im willing to do it. Im willing to work really hard for it just like I said good things in life take time.

Justice Can Not Be Served Until The Debate On Capital Essays
Justice can not be served until the debate on capital punishment is resolved and all states have come to agree that the death penalty is the best way to stop crime completely. "The bottom line is, one method of execution is just as brutal and as barbaric as the next," says Mr. Breedlove of the National Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty. This comes straight from the mouth of a member of a national organization against capital punishment. The American Heritage? Dictionary of the English Language, Third Edition defines execution as The act or an instance of putting to death or being put to death as a lawful penalty. So if Breedloves words hold true, then what he believes is that someone going out and killing someone is barbaric. In a sense isnt that what hes saying, that one way of killing someone is just as bad as any other. So if he finds this so barbaric, why doesnt he do something about it? Many people who are against capital punishment are only thinking of the criminal and how cruel it is for them. But, shouldnt we think of the families that are broken apart now because of the merciless acts of these criminals. Think of Susan Smith, how she knowingly drove her car off into a lake with her two children strapped to the seats. Think of how they must have felt as the cold water started to fill the cabin of the car, and then ultimately drown them. Barbaric is exactly the word I would use to describe her actions. But yet, the jury rejected the death penalty and chose a life sentence instead. Mr. Smith, the father of the two children, broken up from the ruling said "Me and my family are disappointed that the death penalty was not the verdict, but it wasnt our choice. They returned a verdict they thought was justice" (Bragg, pg. 1+). But was it justice that she was not put to death for killing her two children. How could someone possibly let her off the hook of such a crime. They said it would be just as bad for her to be in that cell alone because of her depression, but does it justify her cutting short the lives of the two children who had no idea of their oncoming death. "All grandeur, all power, all subordination to authority rests on the executioner: he is the horror and the bond of human association. Remove this incomprehensible agent from the world and at that very moment order gives way to chaos, thrones topple and society disappears." Says Joseph de Maistre, a eighteenth century French diplomat. He is right, if we give up our punishing a deadly criminal, then we throw our society into chaos and let the criminals freely do as they please. I would know I was safe if anyone that tried to fatally harm me would be put to death. But in this society when someone can kill someone, get sentenced to life, get paroled and then freed to go about and do the same crime again frankly scares me. Another thing that scares me is the fact that this country has softened up on criminals. Its hard to think that now a days everyone has a right, even though when you go against the law and are put in prison, you are suppose to be stripped of your rights. Not so anymore. Justice in the nineties has slacked up a bit. "In the late 1950s, on any given day there were about two hundred prisoners awaiting execution," says Hugo Bedau of Tufts University, Massachusetts. "Hardly any remained on Death Row for more than a year." Today [November 1995], there are 15 times that number, and many have been there for over a decade. Opponents of the death penalty say this statistic is a moral outrage. Supporters see it as undermining a key advantage of the death penalty over life imprisonment: it saves tax-payers the huge cost of keeping murderers locked up (Matthews, pg.s 38-42). Most of those against capital punishment argue that the forms of execution are gruesome. While some might be seen that way at first, others offer the advantages that both parties can agree on. In 1994 there were two hundred fifty seven executions in the United States. There were five methods of doing so, as follows: --- Lethal Injection: 133 Electrocution: 112 Gas Chamber: 9 Hanging: 2 Firing Squad: 1 --- Electric Chair First used in New York in 1890 and still in use in 13 states, "old sparky" was the horrific outcome of Thomas Edisons attempt to show the dangers

Drama vs. Melodrama
Drama vs. Melodrama Drama vs. Melodrama Drama vs. Melodrama By Maeve Maddox A reader asks, What is the difference between ââ¬Å"dramaticâ⬠and ââ¬Å"melodramaticâ⬠in common usage, such as ââ¬Å"Donââ¬â¢t be so dramaticâ⬠or ââ¬Å"Donââ¬â¢t be so melodramaticâ⬠? In common usage, both words are used interchangeably to mean something like ââ¬Å"donââ¬â¢t make such a fuss.â⬠A similar negative use of the noun drama is seen in the expression ââ¬Å"without the drama.â⬠For example: With Cars.com, you get what you need without the drama. Michael Corleone might not have been able to leave the family, but luckily your friends at Foxtel let you leave without the drama. The tagline ââ¬Å"disinfects without the dramaâ⬠differentiates Betadine from other brands. Thanks to advertising, ââ¬Å"without the dramaâ⬠has leaked into general usage as shorthand for ââ¬Å"without difficulty,â⬠ââ¬Å"without complication,â⬠ââ¬Å"without upset,â⬠ââ¬Å"without injured feelings,â⬠ââ¬Å"without tantrums,â⬠etc. Here are examples from various non-advertising contexts: Sort out school fees without the drama 5 Picks to Keep Your Kids Active Without the Drama Merging the Stepfamilies Without the Drama Ever wondered what software development could be like without the drama? The expression ââ¬Å"drama queenâ⬠has become popular to describe a self-centered person- man or woman- who makes an issue of trivial matters of comfort and personal indulgence. The conventional meaning of the word drama is ââ¬Å"a composition in prose or verse, adapted to be acted upon a stage, in which a story is related by means of dialogue and action, and is represented with accompanying gesture, costume, and scenery, as in real life. A melodrama is a drama characterized by exaggeration and sensationalism. The acting style appropriate to a drama is realistic, whereas the acting in a melodrama is bombastic or excessively sentimental. Movies known as ââ¬Å"tears are Sophieââ¬â¢s Choice, Kramer vs Kramer, Love Story, Dead Poets Society, Steel Magnolias, and Ghost. Movies with super heroes and super villains, like the Batman films, are also melodramas. The words melodrama and melodramatic are more precise choices than drama and dramatic to describe an excessive display of emotion. Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? Introduction Speech Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words
Introduction Speech - Essay Example Ronaldo was so influential that he helped his country, Brazil, lift the 2002 world cup. Brazil won 2 nil against Germany. The two goals were entirely scored by Ronaldo. Though he is now retired, Ronaldo, remains a football legend who greatly influenced my liking of the beautiful game and ever since then I have never looked back. I have been an ardent admirer and follower of mainstream teams as well as clubs, especially the English Premier League. I will briefly talk about soccer in the US which is governed by the US Soccer Federation, popularly referred to as US Soccer. This is the organization that is charged with the governing of soccer at all levels in the country; professional leagues, national teams as well as the amateur game. Soccer is the 3rd most played team (behind only basketball and baseball/softball) sport in the US having more than 13 million Americans playing it. Soccer popularity has been rising since the 60s and 70s and especially got a considerable boost when the US played host to the 1994 World Cup. Wangerin in his book; Soccer in a Football World, claims that the term football in the US refers to the sport of American football with the sport of association of football being referred to as ââ¬Å"soccerâ⬠(Wangerin, 2006). In the US the highest professional soccer league is the Major League Soccer (MLS) which is an equivalent of the English Premier League.MLS started playing with 10 teams in 1996 and has grown to the current 20 teams (17 in the US and 3 in Canada) with more expansion in the pipeline. The MLS begins in March and runs up to December, with the overall season winner being awarded the Supportersââ¬â¢ Shield. The post-season winner gets the MLS Cup. Having an average attendance of more than 18,000 for every game, MLS has the highest average turn out of any sports league in the US. It is also the 7th attended professional soccer league in the world. In conclusion,
